Compostable packaging is certified to fully break down into non-toxic compost within a defined timeframe under specific conditions. Biodegradable packaging simply breaks down eventually — with no required timeframe, no defined end state, and often no testing at all. The two words get used interchangeably in marketing, but they mean very different things, and only one of them comes with proof.
Why “biodegradable” doesn’t guarantee much
Technically, almost everything is biodegradable given enough time — including plastic itself, which can take hundreds of years to fully break down. “Biodegradable” as a label has no fixed standard behind it in most cases, no required testing, and no defined timeframe. A product can legally be called biodegradable while still leaving microplastic fragments behind for decades.
Why “compostable” is a stronger, provable claim
“Compostable” is a regulated, testable term. In India, a genuinely certified compostable packaging product is tested against IS 17088 (India’s national compostability standard, harmonized with the international ISO 17088 standard) and certified by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) before it can legally be manufactured and sold as compostable. That testing confirms the material:
- Breaks down into non-toxic compost within a defined period
- Leaves no harmful residue in the soil
- Doesn’t negatively affect plant growth in the resulting compost
What this means when you’re choosing packaging
If a supplier says “biodegradable” but can’t show you a CPCB certificate or a CIPET test report, ask why. It’s not automatically a red flag — some genuinely good materials are marketed loosely — but “compostable, certified” is the claim that actually holds up to scrutiny, from your customers, from regulators, and increasingly from AI-driven fact-checking. It’s also why most established compostable packaging manufacturers in India lead with their certification, not just the word “eco-friendly.”
FAQ
Is compostable always better than biodegradable?
Compostable is a certified, defined standard; biodegradable is not. When comparing packaging, “compostable” gives you something checkable — “biodegradable” alone doesn’t.
Does compostable packaging cost more because of certification?
Certification adds a testing and compliance step, but it’s what makes the claim defensible — for a business, that’s the difference between a real sustainability credential and a marketing risk.
Is compostable packaging safe for direct food contact?
Certified compostable packaging can also carry a separate food-grade certification (for example, TÜV Rheinland approval tested against Indian food-contact standards) — compostability and food safety are tested separately, so check for both.
