Compo Zone Global

By the CompoZone team — CPCB certified compostable packaging manufacturer, Ahmedabad, India.
India banned the manufacture, import, sale, and use of a defined list of single-use plastic items — including plastic cutlery, plates, cups, and straws — effective July 1, 2022, under the Plastic Waste Management Amendment Rules, 2021. Businesses still using or supplying these items are operating outside the law, not just outside best practice.

What’s actually banned

The notified list includes, among other items:

  • Plastic cutlery — spoons, forks, knives, plates, cups, glasses, trays
  • Straws and stirrers
  • Earbuds with plastic sticks
  • Polystyrene (thermocol) for decoration
  • Plastic/PVC banners under 100 microns
  • Wrapping and packing films around sweet boxes and invitation cards

What the penalties are

Violations fall under the Environment Protection Act, 1986, which allows for imprisonment of up to 5 years, a fine of up to ₹1 lakh, or both — separate from additional Environmental Damage Compensation that State Pollution Control Boards can impose, and local municipal penalties.

What businesses are supposed to switch to

This is precisely the gap certified compostable packaging fills. Following the ban, CPCB began issuing certification to compostable plastic manufacturers specifically so businesses would have a compliant, verifiable alternative — not just any product marketed as “eco-friendly,” but one tested and certified under Rule 4(h) of the Plastic Waste Management Rules. A reliable compostable packaging manufacturer in India can supply compostable cutlery and compostable food containers at the volume most food-service and retail businesses actually need.

What this means practically

If your business — a hotel, restaurant, retailer, or caterer — is still sourcing plastic cutlery or containers, it’s a compliance risk, not just a sustainability one. Switching to certified compostable alternatives, sourced through bulk compostable packaging arrangements, resolves both at once.
